This is one of the main reasons why northern Ghana is home to a vast virgin shea forest.
The shea fruit that is picked will be eaten, then the nuts will go through a long process to turn them into shea butter. But one of the things we love the most, is that the fruit that is left unpicked will soon turn into a young shea tree.
This means that when the tree matures and is able to produce fruit, it will provide food for families and also an income for women who collect shea fruit for shea butter production.
