In today's video we are going to go over how to completely calibrate (or align) a tape machine. I break it down so a complete beginner can follow along.
Tape Alignment Process:
1. Input Level Calibration
2. VU Meter Calibration
3. Peak LED Calibration (We are gonna skip this one today because I don't have a proper meter to do this
~~Throw Calibration Test Tape On~~
4. Head Azimuth adjustment (Both Reproduce & Record Head) (10Khz)
5. Playback Level (Both Reproduce & Record Head) (1kHz)
6. Playback EQ Response (Both Reproduce & Record Head) (Compare 10khz and 16khz to the previously set 1kHz)
6a. Low End Playback EQ Response (Both Reproduce & Record Head) (Check 100Hz, probably no adjustment)
~~Take Calibration Test Tape off~~
~~Put Recording Session Tape On~~
7. Set Bias Level (10khz)
8. Set Recording Level (1khz)
9. Set Recording Level Frequency Response (10khz & 16khz & 100Hz)
(Some Other Tests you May have to do)
10. Bias Tuning and Bias Trap Adjustments
11. Erase Ratio
12. Signal to noise Ratio analysis
12. CrossTalk analysis
14. Distortion analysis
