Students of Dhaka College and traders of New Market and its adjacent areas locked into a series of clashes in the city on Monday night and Tuesday, leaving at least one dead and nearly 100 people injured.
The deceased is Nahid Hasan, 18, a courier service delivery boy, said Bacchu Mia, the in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost.
Nahid died at 9:40 pm at the ICU of the hospital, said Baccu, adding that the victim carried marks of birdshot injuries all over his body, including his face and head.
At least two others injured are in critical condition, physicians and teachers of Dhaka College said.
Police fired tear shells and birdshot randomly to bring the situation under control. At least 10 journalists were also injured while covering the clashes that turned the entire New Market area into a war zone.
The clash began after three students locked into an altercation with traders at a fast food shop near gate-4 of the New Market area on Monday night, students and traders said.
The students blocked the road in front of Dhaka College and Nilkhet crossing, vandalised several markets, and set fire to shops and clothing items following the incident.
The clashes disrupted vehicular movement from the Science Lab crossing to the Azimpur area resulting in massive gridlock across the city. Shop owners in the areas kept their shutters down since morning.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital director Brigadier General Nazmul Haque on Tuesday evening said that 54 injured in violence in the New Market area were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Of them, 50 were admitted to the hospital. Two critically injured persons are undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, said Nazmul.
Dhaka College south hall provost Anwar Mahmud said that a student of the management department was taking treatment at a private hospital in critical condition after he was injured on his face and eyes in police firing of birdshot.
Nearly 50 others took primary treatment at local clinics and hospitals, he said.
Dhaka College acting principal professor ATM Moinul Hossain announced the closure of the halls until May 5 and asked the students to vacate the halls amid violence on Tuesday afternoon.
Agitated students, however, rejected the decision and continued to protest against attack on their fellows by traders.
