Sweating under the arms and on other parts of the body is a common symptom of anxiety. It can happen in a whole range of situations, for example:
‒ When you feel scared
‒ When you have anxious thoughts
‒ When you’re triggered by a bodily sensation
‒ When you feel panicky
‒ Interactions with others‒ Presentations or public speaking‒ Being outside your comfort zone‒ Driving or on public transport
‒ When you feel trapped in a place/situation‒ During conflict or arguments‒ When you’re around certain people
Things that can help:
👉Deep breathing exercises can help calm your nervous system and, over time help switch off the stress response.
👉Make sure you drink plenty of water - it helps regulate your body temperature.
👉Wear lightweight clothing to keep your body temperature low.
👉Reduce your intake of caffeine and spicy foods, these can increase sweating.
👉Regularly practising mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or progressive muscle relaxation can help manage overall anxiety levels.
These tips can be helpful for managing anxiety sweating in the short term. For a lasting solution, it’s often necessary to address the underlying reasons for the anxiety, reactions to anxiety, and learning new ways to regulate the nervous system. If you’d like detailed guidance on these things, you’ll find it in my book 📚Ten Times Calmer.
