I had to say something about the group of young kids on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial wearing MAGA hats and shirts. Things haven’t been great for many Americans, and what are we trying to recall with the ‘Again’?

Native American Nathan Phillips uses his drum and song to defuse a tense situation, only to find himself in a stand down with a teenager. This is oddly symbolic of our current political climate.

This video shows much more of the provocation by the Black Israelites preaching/ranting. But the video still highlights that Mr. Phillips attempted to diffuse the situation with his drumming and singing.

The longer video adds more context to the incident, and some of that preachers’ comments were pretty appalling. Now I understand the rowdy nature of the high school kids, as they were reacting to those words initially.

With that said, the symbology in the MAGA hats is what changed the portrayal of the story. I stand by what I said in my video regarding the symbol itself. The xenophobia attached to it automatically puts people on the offensive. In my video, I question whether the kids are choosing to wear them because of that kind of reaction.
