Back then, Imperial Japan wanted to create a "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere"—a plan to take over Asia while pretending to promote unity. In reality, it brought brutal occupation and suffering.
In 1941, Japan invaded the Philippines, setting up a puppet government and bringing violence and cruelty—just like they did in Korea, China, and our neighbors in Southeast Asia.
If Japan had won WWII, all of Asia could have been under its control. Our culture, language, and identity might have been erased—forced to follow Japanese customs, take Japanese names, and abandon local languages.
And the Japan we admire today—its anime, pop culture, and creativity—might not have even existed.
Thankfully, Japan is a good friend today, but we should never forget the dark chapter of WWII—not just for us, but for all of Asia and the countless lives lost.
