Dr. Robert Gaynes discusses a Civil War surgical kit from the Special Collections at the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library at Emory University. The 19th-century kit includes scalpels, bullet extractors, and a hacksaw. Gaynes also talks about early anesthesia, the discovery of antiseptic — too late for the Civil War injured — and the top reason for Civil War deaths: not battlefield fatalities, but post-operative infections, particularly from amputations.Gaynes is a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Emory University School of Medicine and professor of epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health.
