"Best" is for sure a subjective superlative, but Rudolf Serkin is one of the greatest pianists from the 20th century who gets overshadowed in today's discussions by the likes of Rubinstein and Horowitz imo. And maybe he's more popular than I give him credit for, but I can't recall the last time I heard anyone talk about his playing or mention him as one of the notable pianists of the 20th century.
To describe his Beethoven as immaculate would be an understatement. In fact, I learned a lot from listening to an old CD of his where he recorded Beethoven's 3rd and 5th concertos when I was in middle school, and I can pretty confidently say that, outside of my teacher and maybe some teachers from masterclasses, he's been my largest Beethoven influence.
So how does he play Beethoven Sonata No. 30? Let's find out.
