As autumn settles in, we kick off the week under bright blue skies, with Philippe determined to keep the excavation on track. He’s already made significant progress, digging beyond the new barn and steadily working behind the old one. With good weather on his side, he forgoes filming to focus on getting as much done as possible.
But the next day brings an unexpected turn—remnants of Hurricane Kirk arrive, soaking the site with heavy rain and forcing us to pause the work. Despite the delay, Philippe uncovers an important milestone: the excavation reveals an old barn door, showing that the hill behind it wasn’t always there. Centuries of erosion have built up layers of soil, reshaping the landscape.
Amid all this, we experience a heartbreaking loss. One of our beloved chickens falls victim to a fox, and we sadly find her remains on the property. It’s especially tough, as she was one we had been carefully looking after.
With the rain slowing down the excavation, we turn our attention to other tasks. A wild cherry tree, growing too close to the old barn and blocking the path to our future parking area, needed to be removed. Thanks to our neighbor’s help, we were able to clear it, freeing up the space and moving forward with our plans.
As the storm finally passes, Philippe is eager to resume digging but faces a few more setbacks. Still, there’s a silver lining: the excavation work is paying off, and the newer barn is staying dry. That’s progress!
