It’s rainy season in the village, and in today’s video, I take you through a harvest full of lady’s finger recipes, traditional sweets, and spicy, warming dishes perfect for wet weather. From slippery garden paths to steaming pots in the kitchen, this is the heart of Sri Lankan village cooking.
➡️ The garden is soaked with puddles from the non-stop rain, reminding me of childhood days helping my grandmother make clay floors with cow dung. And just like then, I still carry those simple habits today — especially when cooking with freshly harvested okra, or as we call it, lady’s fingers.
First, I made a tempered okra curry with egg and garlic, followed by a refreshing okra salad with tomatoes, cucumber, salt, and lime. I served both with a hearty village-style lunch: boiled manioc with coconut, tempered carrot and dry fish, dhal curry, and curd chilies — all deeply rooted in Sri Lankan traditional food.

The next day, I used okra sap to prepare a batch of Asmi, a traditional Sri Lankan sweet. Made by skillfully pouring the okra-based mixture into hot oil, the result is delicate and crisp. Once fried and rested for a few days, the Asmi is refried and sweetened with melted jaggery or sugar. It’s a labor of love — and worth every bite.
➡️ For a healthy twist, I blended a juice made from butterfly pea flowers, okra pieces, passion fruit, and yellow watermelon — a nutrient-rich and beautiful drink for early mornings. To end the day, I prepared a spicy tempered vegetable masala using a colorful mix of okra, carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, bell peppers, purple cabbage, turkey berries, cauliflower, and beans. Served with pumpkin roti topped with sesame seeds, this dish is full of flavor and perfect for rainy days.
This video is packed with okra curry, okra salad, okra-based sweets, and rainy season recipes — all using fresh garden vegetables, natural ingredients, and traditional Sri Lankan cooking methods.

💬 Have you ever used lady’s fingers in sweets or drinks before? Which of these recipes would you try first? Let me know in the comments below!
