Original - The Top Notes
The Top Notes released the original version in 1961. An early Phil Spector production, made shortly after he joined Atlantic Records as a house producer.
The Isley Brothers
Co-writer Bert Berns was unimpressed with Spector's result. He took it to Wand records and produced a version himself with the Isley Brothers. Twist and Shout gave them their first major hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Beatles
Beatles released Twist and Shout on their first UK album, Please Please Me. In America it first appeared on their debut V-J album, Introducing the Beatles. It also gave them their 6th American hit single, a #2 on the Tollie label.
On 4 November 1963 the Beatles appeared at the Royal Command Performance. John Lennon famously introduced the song with, “Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands and the rest of you just rattle your jewellery”.
