When the ignition key is turned, it sounds like the engine starts immediately. However, there is a very important mechanical process behind that. An electric current flows to the starter solenoid, which pushes the pinion gear forward to hook onto the flywheel. This movement rotates the crankshaft, causing the pistons to rise and fall and initiating combustion in the engine compartment. Once the engine starts, the pinion gear automatically retreats to its original position. This entire process takes place in a matter of seconds. Without this mechanism, the car would never start.
