Did you know the Philippine alphabet has secret letters?Most people are familiar with the standard 26 letters of the English alphabet.
But back then, the old Filipino alphabet—called Abakada—only had 20.
Then in 1987, the modern Filipino alphabet was introduced, adding these letters — bringing the total to 28.
But two of those letters stand out!
Meet Ñ and Ng.
Ñ came from Spanish influence. It sounds like “nya,” as in señorito.
Ng, on the other hand, is native to Philippine languages. It sounds like “nga,” as in ngayon… or tang***.
And even though it looks like two letters, Ng is officially treated as one.
