It wasn’t in the best shape as there was noticeable rot and wear, especially at the bottom, but maybe it had potential. With a price tag of just €10, we figured it was worth taking a chance. The door was heavy, too heavy to lift by hand, so we used a forklift to load it into the van. But the real work was just beginning.
Now many would only see a battered old door covered in layers of flaky old paint. To be honest was covered by shody repairs with damp and wood-worm destroying most of the wood. Beyond the rotting grime I saw intricate craftsmanship and inspiration. To be honest I was blown away by the quality, this wasn't the average plastic tat, this door told a story. Just think "How many people have walked through this door? Who built it? And what’s was it's history?"
What really caught my eye was the 'grille de défense'. At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of them. All those layers of old paint made it impossible to see, I assumed they were just cheap, mass-produced items but these definitely weren’t made by a machine. No, this was the work of a skilled artisans, creating something with raw talent and simple tools.
After hours of stripping away, I found a handmade work of art. The wood sculpted by a highly talented carpenter, the rest forged in a blacksmith’s shop, long before robots and machines took over the craft. You could feel the hands of the maker in every curve and detail. It was craftsmanship from a time when things were made to last and to be admired.
Now, the wood itself was unfortunately beyond saving. It was too rotten to be reused, but the door wasn't finished yet. Inspired by the incredible elements and thinking about a new design I sketched out a fresh take on this old door. The ancient 19th century locking mechanisms and grilles would look magnificent on a replica oak door.
