Cleft lip and palate are among the most common congenital conditions, affecting about 1 in 700 births worldwide. They occur when there’s an incomplete fusion of the tissues that form the lip and palate during early fetal development. While the exact cause is still unknown, a combination of genetic and environmental factors, such as maternal smoking, malnutrition, or certain medications during pregnancy, can increase the risk. The incidence of cleft lip and palate is higher in some regions, particularly in parts of Asia, Latin America, and Africa. This could be due to a mix of genetic predispositions and limited access to prenatal care and nutrition. Children born with these conditions can face a range of challenges, from difficulty feeding and speaking to frequent ear infections and dental problems. However, with timely intervention, including surgeries, speech therapy, and dental care, these children can lead healthy, fulfilling lives. Surgical repair of the cleft is usually done in stages, beginning in the first few months of life, dramatically improving function and appearance. I’m so honored to be a part of this incredible team and can’t wait to come back! #cleftlip #cleftpalate #projectvietnam #projectvietnamfoundation #drkieutips
