Thousands of protesters have rushed on to the streets of Israel, voicing their anger over the hardline government’s controversial judicial overhaul.

The escalation of unrest came after parliament passed the first parts of the legislation, designed to protect the position of the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Protesters scuffled with police and broke past them, stopping traffic on the main highway as they sat down.
