PJD Carey Apprentice:
If you’re not familiar with PJD Guitars, then you should be – they’re excellent instruments, handmade in York, England, to the highest of standards. PJD currently make 4 main models: the offset St. John, the double cutaway, Stratocaster influenced Woodford, the Telecaster-inspired York, and the singlecut Carey.
This specific guitar, the Carey Apprentice, is a limited, stripped back and aged version of the Carey, and it really does – at least on first glance – contain the DNA of both a Les Paul Junior and an Esquire. You’ve got the solid, single cutaway Gibson-esque body (made of lightweight obeche wood) and a single PJD Fat Nacho P90 pickup. Then there’s the more Fendery stuff: a hardtail Strat-type bridge, a bolt-on roasted maple neck with a 25.5” scale length, and that very Tele-ish headstock.
There’s one other cool thing to mention: the Carey Apprentice is also loaded with a Mars-Tronic Treblemaker kit. This is a particularly flexible take on the treble bleed, and you can find out more about it here:
So, the Carey Apprentice has much to offer… but how good is it really? How versatile can that single P90 pickup be? That’s what we’re about to find out! Here, I test the guitar in as many different styles as I can, from country, folk and indie, to pop, rock, blues, punk, metal and more.

27:46 My conclusions on the Carey Apprentice and why you should buy it
My setup was as follows: I ran the guitar into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head, using my Greer Lightspeed and Revv G3 pedals for drive sounds, and my TC Electronic Plethora X3 for some occasional extra ambient noises. The amp went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done.
Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
