Fatty Liver Disease
The liver performs many important functions.
It:
Filters blood in the body
Removes bacteria and harmful substances
Forms clotting factors that control bleeding
Stores nutrients
Produces bile which helps digest food.
What is fatty liver disease?
Fatty liver disease is caused by the storage of extra fat in the liver.
The condition progresses through three stages.
Stage 1: Steatohepatitis: Liver cells become inflamed.
Stage 2: Fibrosis: Scar tissue forms where the liver is inflamed.
Stage 3:Cirrhosis: Extensive scar tissue replaces healthy tissue.
This stage leads to liver failure, liver cancer, ascites, esophageal Varices.
Types of fatty liver disease
Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD): Occurs as a result of heavy drinking.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): Occurs due to several factors, such as obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome.
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH): NASH is a type of NAFLD. It occurs when the buildup of excess fat in the liver is accompanied by inflammation.
How can you prevent fatty liver disease?
Maintain healthy weight
Do regular exercise
Limit alcohol
Fatty liver disease is often diagnosed with a Liver Function Test (LFT)
Early diagnosis of fatty liver disease helps to reverse the damage with timely treatment.
