the great gatsby is a 1925 novel by american writer f. scott fitzgerald. set in the jazz age on long island, the novel depicts narrator nick carraway's interactions with mysterious millionaire jay gatsby and gatsby's obsession to reunite with his former lover, daisy buchanan.

the novel was inspired by a youthful romance fitzgerald had with socialite ginevra king and the riotous parties he attended on long island's north shore in 1922. following a move to the french riviera, fitzgerald completed a rough draft in 1924. he submitted the draft to editor maxwell perkins, who persuaded fitzgerald to revise the work over the following winter. after making revisions, fitzgerald was satisfied with the text, but remained ambivalent about the book's title and considered several alternatives. painter francis cugat's final cover design impressed fitzgerald who incorporated a visual element from the art into the novel.

jay gatsby (originally james "jimmy" gatz)—a young, mysterious millionaire with shady business connections (later revealed to be a bootlegger), originally from north dakota. during world war i, when he was a young military officer stationed at the united states army's camp taylor in louisville, kentucky, gatsby encountered the love of his life, the debutante daisy buchanan. later, after the war, he studied briefly at trinity college, oxford, in england. according to fitzgerald's wife zelda, he partly based gatsby on their enigmatic long island neighbor, max gerlach. a military veteran, gerlach became a self-made millionaire due to his bootlegging endeavors and was fond of using the phrase "old sport" in his letters to fitzgerald.


thomas p. wiseau is a european-born american actor and filmmaker. he is best known for writing, producing, directing, and starring in the 2003 film the room, which has been described by many critics as one of the worst films ever made and has gained cult status. he also co-directed the 2004 documentary homeless in america and created the 2015 sitcom the neighbors.

many details about wiseau's personal life (including his age, source of wealth, and background) remain unverified, and as such have been the subject of intense fan speculation and various conflicting reports. the 2013 non-fiction book the disaster artist: my life inside the room, the greatest bad movie ever made by greg sestero, as well as its 2017 film adaptation, chronicle the making of the room and wiseau's life behind the scenes.
