On 13 September 1993, the Oslo I Accord was signed on the White House lawn in Washington DC by Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian representative Yasser Arafat. The agreement represented a historic breakthrough in the search for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The same day, former president Jimmy Carter was giving a sermon to his local congregation at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia. The former president took the opportunity to discuss the Arab-Israeli conflict with his fellow church-goers, and to pray for peace. As he left the church early to travel to Washington, Carter was interviewed by ITN's Jon Snow, who asked the Carter whether he believed the peace would hold.
