The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to three scientists working in the field of quantum mechanics.

This year’s prize was awarded to Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger. The trio independently researched light’s quantum properties.

The three scientists conducted experiments related to quantum entanglement, where two particles are linked regardless of the space between them.

This is a field of science that disturbed Albert Einstein himself, who once referred to quantum entanglement in a letter as “spooky action at a distance”.

The trio’s research on subatomic particles can lead to advances in super computing and encrypted communication.

The Nobel Prize is 10 million Swedish kronor or roughly 917´000 US dollars and it is to be shared equally between the laureates.
