Vivienne Courtland is the name we used for the Northern Soul pseudonym for Sharon Dee Clarke, former lead singer of Nomad in the 1990s, and a famous actress from The Lion King, The Singing Detective, and Doctor Who. Back in 1986, thirty six years ago, "Dance Your Way Out Of The Door" was Sharon's very first record, a minor hit on Arista Records, and a big favourite of Tony Blackburn's when it was released in 1986. She was discovered by my friend and protege Damon Rochefort, and together they went on to create Nomad, selling over a million singles with "Devotion". I got to produce Nomad's excellent version of Barbara Pennington's "Twenty Four Hours A Day". Then Sharon starred in the London musical of The Lion King, before landing a major acting role in the BBC series, Holby City. Amazingly, most people never knew that she was a singer before she became famous as an actress, although she always did both, appearing in the 1980's on Dennis Potter's "Pennies From Heaven". For those fans of mine who may not have known this, Sharon was also the singer, under the pseudonym of Vivienne Courtland, on those two classic tracks, "I Got A Right To Survive", and "Holding On Tighter", on the Sensational label.
