Wikipedia is a goldmine of information, but its photos of public figures often leave something to be desired. Unlike glossy magazine covers or professionally curated Instagram profiles, the images on Wikipedia must adhere to strict copyright rules. They often rely on Creative Commons licenses or public domain images, which can severely limit the pool of available photos. As a result, Wikipedia articles frequently feature candid snapshots from press events, grainy photos taken by amateurs, or awkward moments immortalized at just the wrong time.

Professional headshots and polished publicity stills are usually off-limits unless explicitly released under an appropriate license, which most celebrities and their teams rarely do. This leads to a peculiar phenomenon where some of the most iconic faces in the world are represented online by some of their least flattering images. While these photos may not always capture individuals in their best light, they highlight Wikipedia’s commitment to open access and free use, even if that occasionally means sacrificing a bit of aesthetic quality for the greater good of information sharing.
