This is the overdubbed and upspeeded version of the original. I guess Specialty was following Atlantic's lead (and ABC-Paramount's with the then current Lloyd Price hits), "sweetening" their R&B to supposedly appeal to a wider market. Specialty probably used the Stewart Sisters (a white group) for the overdubs.

The original "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" (Specialty 428; see that entry) entered the Billboard R&B charts on May 17, 1952.
It reached POS. #01. It stayed there for 7 week2.
It stayed 26 weeks on the charts.
