Then I started coming across these new labels with names like Northern Line, Music Hustler and Strictly Bangorz. It's hard to say exactly how you can tell this stuff, but I'd look at the labels, the artist's names, the fonts, and just know they were gonna be legit. You could feel it!
The music on them was this brutal Northern mutation of garage, stripped down to aggy 4/4 beats, RnB and ragga vocals, gunshots and insane warped bass. Of course I loved it lol. It had the exact same sugar rush as hardcore, mixed with the edgy paranoia of jungle, what's not to love.
The scene only produced one real mainstream hit (Heartbroken, included here; a UK classic) but the deeper cuts are still sounding wild - and I think their influence can be clearly heard in all the warping, bass heavy garage kids are making in 2024 ... Enjoy!
