What’s better – a modded Harley Benton, or a stock Epiphone? Loads of people have asked me how these two guitars compare, so here’s your answer!

Harley Benton SC-450 gold top at Thomann:

The Harley Benton SC-450 and the 2020 Epiphone SG Classic are affordable, vintage-inspired guitars equipped with a pair of P90 pickups. And they both have beautiful finishes – the SC-450’s gold top is exquisite, while the Worn Green open grain satin finish on the SG was enough for me to buy the guitar on its own.

Is that where the similarities end though? Here I play the two guitars in a variety of styles to compare how they sound, feel and perform.

I ran the guitars through a Greer Lightspeed overdrive pedal, a Revv G3 distortion pedal and my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. That went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done.
