The two city authorities in Dhaka are ignoring open spaces like streets, parks, and markets while conducting anti-mosquito drives, turning them into potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes and creating a threat to the further spread of the dengue virus. While visiting different spots in the city, including roads, markets, terminals, community centres, and water fountains, New Age correspondents found them filled with stagnant water, creating a favourable environment for dengue.
Without cleaning the open spaces and roadside ditches city corporations are often found penalising individuals for stagnant water in their houses as part of their anti-mosquito drives.
