I’d say about 70% of the time I record drums at home I am using 4 mics, especially if I am going for a more natural kind of sound. Lots of people recording music at home are limited by the number of mics, preamps, or inputs they have to work with, so getting a good sound that doesn’t eat up all your resources is practical. On the artistic side, I like the minimal approach because it forces me to focus on how the drums themselves sound and how I’m playing them. I made a video showing my approach, and I cheated a little by adding in a 5th mic, because YOLO!
In this video I’m using a vintage Yamaha 9000YD kit (12”, 16”, 22”), a 70’s Ludwig Supraphonic snare, and Istanbul Agop cymbals.
