A ‘female’ penguin at a wildlife park in England has been renamed after staff discovered he was in fact a gay male

The king penguin formerly known as “Maggie”, lives at Birdland Park and Gardens, in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, which has the UK’s only king penguin breeding colony. Earlier this week, staff announced in an Instagram post that following some DNA tests, “Maggie” was revealed to be a male, and so was renamed “Magnus”.

The 10 year old penguin was brought to Birdland from Odense in Denmark in 2016 as part of a breeding programme to boost numbers.

But that’s not all.

Questions were raised about Magnus’ sex when keepers saw him attempting to mate with another male penguin, Frank.

This discovery now means the park only has one female king penguin, 30 year old Bill, who like Magnus was also misgendered due to her size at birth.

Alistair Keen, the head keeper at Birdland said in a statement: “Discovering that Magnus is actually a male and his gender differs from what we initially believed presents another unique hurdle in our efforts to establish a successful breeding programme here in the UK.”

Magnus and Bill live with 3 other penguins, including Seth who at 39 is the world’s oldest living king penguin.
