A long time ago, snakes used to have legs. Scientists believe that snakes evolved from ancient lizards that had four legs. Over millions of years, those legs slowly disappeared as snakes adapted to living underground or in tight spaces.

Fossils have been found showing early snakes with tiny back legs. Some snakes even had small bones where legs used to be. This proves that they once had limbs but lost them through evolution.

One reason snakes lost their legs is because they began to move by slithering. Slithering helped them move smoothly through grass, sand, and underground tunnels. Legs were not needed anymore, so nature slowly removed them.

Even today, some pythons and boas still have small bumps near their tails. These are called "vestigial limbs." They are leftovers from the time when snakes had legs.

This shows how animals can change over time to survive better in their environment. Snakes are a good example of how evolution works, turning four-legged lizards into legless, slithering hunters.
