Get Involved and explore a range of free workshops run by artists Rachel Carter, Ismail Khokon and Anisha Parmar to create a stunning new art installation ’Speak Her Name’ featuring the names of 100 historic women connected to the story of cotton. Standing in This Place is an arts and heritage project funded by Heritage Lottery. The artists recently opened their first major exhibition at the Museum of Making in July 2023 which runs until 7th January 2024. It sheds light on some of the amazing participatory work behind this co-created project. The artists are running community workshops at Art Core, Derby and celebrating with an exhibition in the Art Core Gallery during January and February 2024. 

Ismail Khokon will be leading participants in a series of workshops as part of the Standing in This Place project, examining the region’s connections to industry, cloth-making, slavery and everyday life. The collage workshops will include textile embellishment, photomontage and storytelling through mother tongue. The series of creative workshops will focus on the Swadeshi movement in India and the wider history of Muslin fabrics and golden fibre of Bangladesh.

Rachel Carter will be bringing the Standing in This Place project to the Artcore ‘Knit and Natter’ drop in sessions in the café where the public will be invited to enjoy a cuppa whilst embellishing calico framed in embroidery hoops with the names of historic women from across the Midlands that you can use in your work.

Anisha Parmar is seeking to open a dialogue and document conversations with women from Derby as part of the Standing in This Place project, who have collected or been handed down, precious pieces of jewellery/adornment. Through a series of creative workshops we will be documenting your memories of adornment through material play and collage as a way to tell your story creatively and to be embedded in the legacy of the project.

Bring your old photos, pieces of clothing you hold dear and an open mind and heart to share your stories in a collective safe space.
