This is Darien Gap, it's the 100-mile stretch of land between Panama and Colombia.
The Darien Gap is part of the Pan-American Highway, a network of roads meant to connect
North and South America, stretching from Alaska all the way to Argentina. But in this gap, the
road stops.
Because the Darien Gap is one of the most dangerous and impenetrable regions on Earth.
The terrain made construction impossible, as the area is isolated, and attempts to build roads
were repeatedly thwarted by natural obstacles.
On top of the natural challenges, the region has political issues, it's a border zone between
Colombia and Panama, and conflict zones make it too risky for large-scale construction projects.
And let's not forget the danger. The Darien Gap is known for criminal activity, including drug
trafficking and human smuggling. It’s a no-go zone for most travelers.
