Spider-Man: No Way Home is a 2021 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and the 27th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. It stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire. In the film, Parker asks Dr. Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch) to use magic to make his identity as Spider-Man a secret again after this was revealed to the world at the end of Far From Home. When the spell goes wrong because of Parker's actions, the multiverse is broken open and visitors from alternate realities are brought into Parker's universe.

A third MCU Spider-Man film was planned during the production of Homecoming in 2017. Negotiations between Sony and Marvel Studios to alter their deal—in which they produce the Spider-Man films together—ended with Marvel Studios leaving the project in August 2019, but a negative fan reaction led to a new deal between the companies a month later. Watts, McKenna, Sommers, and Holland were set to return, and filming took place from October 2020 to March 2021 in New York City and Atlanta. No Way Home serves as a crossover between the MCU and the previous Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi and Marc Webb. Several actors reprise their roles from those films, including previous Spider-Man actors Maguire and Garfield. The pair's involvement was the subject of wide speculation and numerous leaks despite the efforts of Sony, Marvel, and the cast to conceal their involvement.

Adrian Toomes is the former owner of Bestman Salvage who lost his livelihood after Damage Control, a joint venture between the federal government and Stark Industries, took over salvaging operations in New York City. Recruiting his co-workers and equipping himself with a flying exo-suit that Tinkerer created using Chitauri technology, Toomes took on the identity of the Vulture and became a black market arms dealer. However, after four years, his illegal activities were noticed by Spider-Man, thus forcing him to fight the young hero. After sending Shocker to deal with Spider-Man, Vulture hijacked Tony Stark's cargo plane, although he was once again thwarted by Spider-Man. During their final clash, Spider-Man defeated Vulture before saving his life and leaving him for the authorities to apprehend. Toomes was then incarcerated in prison, and in gratitude to Spider-Man for saving him, refused to give up the hero's true identity.

Adrian Toomes had married Doris and together they had their daughter, Elizabeth "Liz" Allan. In order to support his own family, Toomes had founded the salvage company, Bestman Salvage, in New York City. Toomes discovered his daughter had a natural talent for art like he had in his childhood, which made him proud as he vowed to secure Liz's future.

In 2012, in the wake of the Battle of New York, the Bestman Salvage had successfully gained the contract to clean up the city. Having shown Phineas Mason a picture that his daughter had just drawn of the battle and the Avengers involved with it, Toomes oversaw all his men cleaning up Grand Central Station, telling Herman Schultz to use the Chitauri technology to take apart one of the crashed Chitauri Chariots as their own Toomes confronted Jackson Brice for arriving later for their job, with Brice blaming his lateness on his alarm failing to go off while Toomes told him to stack the Chitauri armor plating as he had been asked to do. Toomes was then approached by Anne Marie Hoag and her team of agents, telling him that they thanked him for his efforts but that he was to withdraw his teams from the area as the Damage Control had secured the contract to clean up after the Avengers' future battles.
