The seventh and latest SpaceX launch did not go as quite as planned Thursday due to an unexpected explosion of the Starship vessel’s “upper stage,” forcing flights to be diverted as debris plummeted through the sky over various islands.The mishap comes after a promising start to what Elon Musk's company considers a "new generation" of the Starship spacecraft, which was designed to eventually carry astronauts to the moon and beyond, lifting off into orbit.
Addressing the explosion, Musk took to his social media platform, X, writing, “Preliminary indication is that we had an oxygen/fuel leak in the cavity above the ship engine firewall that was large enough to build pressure in excess of the vent capacity.” Musk promised fixes, adding that “nothing so far” warranted a delay in the next Starship launch.
SpaceX has designed the Starship launch system to be fully reusable and hopes to use it for deep-space exploration, heavy-lift launches and space tourism. The company has already sold two private trips around the moon on Starship, with NASA picking Starship to land its Artemis 3 astronauts on the moon by 2026.
