Jeanne de Clisson: Born in 1300 in Belleville-sur-Vie, France, Jeanne de Clisson, also known as the "Lioness of Brittany," was a noblewoman who turned to piracy to avenge her husband's execution by King Philip VI. She sold her estates to fund a fleet of black ships with red sails, terrorizing French vessels in the English Channel during the mid-14th century. Her ferocity and determination made her a legendary figure in maritime history

Her husband was slain by a traitor's decree
Executed by France, no justice to see

Olivier de Clisson was taken away
By King Philip’s hand on that dark, fateful day

To avenge her love and honor the dead
No mercy for France, no kindness to show
For the Lioness hunted with death in tow

For thirteen long years, she ruled the waves
Sending French ships to watery graves
King Philip’s men trembled, they cursed her name
But Jeanne de Clisson lit the sea aflame!
