Jeanne de Clisson: Born in 1300 in Belleville-sur-Vie, France, Jeanne de Clisson, also known as the "Lioness of Brittany," was a noblewoman who turned to piracy to avenge her husband's execution by King Philip VI. She sold her estates to fund a fleet of black ships with red sails, terrorizing French vessels in the English Channel during the mid-14th century. Her ferocity and determination made her a legendary figure in maritime history
Lyrics:
In the year thirteen hundred and thirty-three
The Lioness of Brittany set sail on the sea
Her husband was slain by a traitor's decree
Executed by France, no justice to see
Oh, Jeanne de Clisson, fierce and bold
With black sails flying, her story’s told
A sword in her hand, fire in her eyes
She hunted the French beneath stormy skies!
Olivier de Clisson was taken away
By King Philip’s hand on that dark, fateful day
With no crime committed, his blood was shed
And Jeanne swore revenge for the life he bled
Oh, Jeanne de Clisson, fierce and bold
With black sails flying, her story’s told
A sword in her hand, fire in her eyes
She hunted the French beneath stormy skies!
She sold off her lands and gathered her crew
With a heart full of vengeance, her fury grew
Three ships she purchased, "The Black Fleet" they’d be
To bring terror and death on the darkened sea
The black fleet sailed with sails of red
To avenge her love and honor the dead
No mercy for France, no kindness to show
For the Lioness hunted with death in tow
Oh, Jeanne de Clisson, fierce and bold
With black sails flying, her story’s told
A sword in her hand, fire in her eyes
She hunted the French beneath stormy skies!
For thirteen long years, she ruled the waves
Sending French ships to watery graves
King Philip’s men trembled, they cursed her name
But Jeanne de Clisson lit the sea aflame!
Oh, Jeanne de Clisson, fierce and bold
With black sails flying, her story’s told
A sword in her hand, fire in her eyes
She hunted the French beneath stormy skies!
Now raise a glass to the pirate queen
The fiercest warrior the seas have seen
Her name lives on in the sailor’s song
The Lioness who righted the wrong!
