Details:
This listing is for a vintage suitcase kick/bass drum. I have nicknamed it the blue beauty. The inside of the suitcase has been stripped and an extra layer of wood have been added to the rear (batter/drumhead side) for added durability. The inside has also been lined with a blue rubber mat material which gives a nice aesthetic touch and additional warmth to the tone. The drumhead is a 12" Evans blue hydraulic head on a half shell of a 12" tom. In the video I am playing the suitcase with a Gibraltar cajon pedal beater. I recommend this style of beater for a softer tone to get the richness of the bass tones out. The legs are vintage Pearl bass drum legs. One of the legs has a non-matching bottom which looks to be a fix that was done by the previous owner. This suitcase looks to be around the 1940's era. I also added the antiqued finished tacks on the top of the drum. The Blue Beauty is a beautiful drum with plenty of blemishes as it was definitely well used, however after careful cleaning it has come to life and in my opinion has enough character to give an automatic wow factor to any set-up. It's sound has most impressed me as even when not mic'd up it sounds great! In the listed video I only added slight (approximately 10%) reverb, however other than that it has not been eq'd at all and no other effects were added. It has plenty of punch and tone but delivers enough bottom end to support the groove. I have played it with a fusion acoustic kit all mic'd up with a band and it did more than do the job; it rocked!
