On 10 March 1988, US President Ronald Reagan spoke to ITN's Alastair Burnet in the White House. Reflecting on eight years in office, Reagan gave a detailed history of the strategic arms negotiations with the USSR which concluded in the historic Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty of 1987. Towards the end of the conversation, Burnet asked the 40th President of the United States what his advice would be to his successor, who was yet to be decided in the Republican primaries. "Deal from strength," Reagan replied, adding, "peace through strength is common sense."
