When you consider the racial demographics of ERP therapists registered with the International OCD Federation, it becomes clear that we need to continue to break barriers to OCD treatment by increasing the number of OCD therapists who are trained in ERP:
1 Asian
2 Indigenous
10 Middle Eastern
15 Black
78 Hispanic
1174 white
It is vital to increase the number of ERP-trained Clinicians of Color in order to create safety and support for BIPOC individuals who struggle with OCD.
OCD Set Free and ERP Kaleidescope @erpkaleidescope exist to create safety & access for Clients of Color.
For instance, we want to support Clients of Color seeking OCD treatment who may face fears of discrimination that they’re going to be perceived as angry or dangerous, because they struggle with harm OCD thoughts.
It feels so good to create safety for Clients of Color who might not otherwise have access to OCD treatment. But we also have so much more work to do to increase access. We need more ERP-trained therapists who can serve BIPOC communities. We also need to continue to de-stigmatize and reduce isolation within Communities of Color by connecting clinicians and clients. Furthermore, Clinicians of Color need more access to funding for research and platforms to share their voices and to support the unique challenges facing our communities.
