Many have heard the saying 'Traditional methods are best', but until you have seen it first hand in full colour, smelly-vision, these old phrases can fall on deaf ears.

Take the old cement vs lime mortar debate. Our house had been left unoccupied for 30 years, mold was growing on the walls and the ceiling was hanging down. Mortar was dropping off the walls. Upon further investigation we discovered the top half of the walls were lime mortar and the bottom was a very dark, granite like, cement. Both were blown, meaning they were detached from the stone masonry behind.

Behind the lime mortar it was dry, however behind the cement it was soaking wet, which considering we were in a 40 degree heat wave, seemed quite bazaar. The smell of damp coming from the cement area was incredibly strong. There was also visible evidence of subsidence and cracking of stones. There had been no serious rain in the area for around 8 weeks and the walls were obviously saturated. The mortar at the top and bottoms of the walls were at opposite end of the colour charts, vanilla versus dark brown.

Within 48 hours of exposure to natural air, the smell had completely gone and the walls had dried out. This proved 100% that it was the cement that had indeed trapped all that moisture in the walls almost as effective as a rubber membrane.

Now, all that is left for us to do is rake out all the mortar and re-point with lime mortar.

We all know the why and reasons for many arguments, but it great to have a live demonstration every so often.
