The Mongols were absolute masters of deception and psychological warfare, often using innovative strategies to confuse and terrify their enemies. One of their most ingenious tricks involved creating "scarecrow soldiers." By stuffing human-shaped figures with straw, dressing them in robes, and even topping them with authentic Mongol hats, they created the illusion of a much larger army. These scarecrows were placed on horseback and arranged in battle lines to intimidate foes and give the impression of overwhelming numbers.

A brilliant example of this tactic took place in 1241 when Hungary's Bishop Benedict of Várad led an army to pursue a Mongol detachment. The Mongols, appearing to retreat, lured the Hungarian forces toward a hill. As the Hungarians advanced, they were horrified to see a second Mongol line waiting in ambush—except it wasn’t real. The “soldiers” were nothing more than scarecrows, but the psychological impact worked. The Hungarians panicked, retreated, and were ultimately chased down and slaughtered by the real Mongol troops. This clever ruse shows the brilliance of the Mongols in using minimal resources to maximum effect.
