By stuffing human-shaped figures with straw, dressing them in robes, and even topping them with authentic Mongol hats, they created the illusion of a much larger army. The “soldiers” were nothing more than scarecrows, but the psychological impact worked. The Hungarians panicked, retreated, and were ultimately chased down and slaughtered by the real Mongol troops.
