Did you know the Philippines has Olympic medalists?
Let’s start with bronze. 🥉
Teófilo Yldefonso, the first Filipino Olympic medalist, won two in swimming in 1928 and 1932. That same year Villanueva took one in boxing and Toribio in high jump. White followed in 1936 in the 400 meter hurdles. Later came Serantes, Velasco, Marcial, and Petecio with Villegas, all in boxing.
Now onto silver. 🥈
Villanueva earned the country's first in 1964 for boxing, followed by Velasco in 1996, Diaz in 2016 for weightlifting, and Petecio with Paalam in 2020 both in boxing.
And finally gold. 🥇
Hidilyn Diaz won the first Olympic gold in 2020 for weightlifting and in 2024 Carlos Yulo added two in gymnastics for floor exercise and vault.
That is 10 bronze, 5 silver, and 3 gold for a total of 18 Olympic medals for the Philippines.
