On 16 July 1975, ITN's Reggie Bosanquet presented "Apollo-Soyuz Link Up", a special programme covering the historic US-USSR joint mission to space. Symbolic of the thawing of relations between the Cold War superpowers known as detente, the Apollo-Soyuz mission saw American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts dock their space craft together and shake hands while orbiting earth. On board the US Apollo craft were Thomas P. Stafford, Vance D. Brand, and Deke Slayton, while Alexei Leonov and Valery Kubasov crewed the USSR's Soyuz capsule. Reginald Bosanquet, assisted by ITN's science editor Peter Fairley, spoke with experts about what audiences could expect to see from the historic mission, and what scientists hoped to learn from it.
