Western Massachusetts has a new face of weirdo punk in the likes of Fugue State, who are releasing their debut LP "In The Lurch" in the spring of 2025. Fugue State draws on influences like Pere Ubu and Roxy Music and focuses them through the lens of contemporary garage rock, punk, and psychedelia. The band's live sound has drawn comparisons to Butthole Surfers, Crime, The Flesh Eaters, and "The Gun Club if they took mushrooms instead of dope."

Following last year’s release of ‘Subtlety's Dead’ EP, the Massachusetts-based punk-band is
happy to announce their new album. Coming out April.

Western Massachusettes underground punk scene is about to be shaken by ‘In The Lurch,’ the
debut LP from Fugue State, set for release on April 4 via Strange Mono Records. With a
sound that feels like it’s broadcast through a warped transistor radio from another dimension,
Fugue State is redefining the boundaries of weirdo punk. Following up on the 2023 EP
‘Subtlety’s Dead,’ ‘In The Lurch’ LP was born out of sheer momentum—what began as a live
reinterpretation of past work quickly spiraled into something much bigger. Adding an off-kilter,
jazz-inflected edge to the album’s controlled chaos, In The Lurch features guest appearances
by Wednesday Knudsen (Pigeons, Stella Kola) on tenor saxophone and Vigilance Brandon
(Trance Macabre) on trumpet, further solidifying Fugue State’s place in the realm of sonic
experimentalism.

The album’s lead single, ‘Moot Point,’ distills the essence of Fugue State into a two-minute
existential spiral and sets the stage thematically for the rest of the album. “‘Moot Point’ is a song
about questioning the relevance and importance of your own artistry, and by extension, your
entire existence,” says Shane Bruno, describing the track as a self-aware crisis of confidence.
Bruno stresses: “It’s a bit melodramatic and not meant to be taken entirely seriously, but it
comes from a real and relatable place. I’m always aiming for the middle ground between those
two things with my songwriting for Fugue State.”
