Between 10 and 12 April 1981, thousands of rioters clashed with Metropolitan Police officers in Brixton, London. Hundreds of cars and buildings were burned, shops were looted, and between 300 and 400 officers and civilians were injured. The violence triggered an investigation into British policing and UK race relations led by Lord Scarman, whose landmark ruling found social and economic inequalities to be a key cause of the disturbances. Presented here are a series of news reports from the ITN Archive covering the 1981 Brixton Riots, also known as the Brixton Uprising, and the historic Scarman Report that followed.

The ITN Archive holds 16mm rushes of the Brixton riots. They are undigitised and have never been seen since the day they were filmed. To enquire about digitisation and licensing, contact itn.archive@gettyimages.com.
