Join us as we visit the West Coast of New Zealand - one of the most picturesque areas of the country renowned for its rugged landscape, black sand beaches and natural wonders.

The West Coast is truly a beautiful part of New Zealand that’s very popular with adventurers. It has spectacular coastal roads, mountains, and rivers, and however remote it may appear to be, it is full of incredible places to discover.

Our road trip to the West Coast started on a beautiful winter’s day in the month of July. The air was cool and crisp, with frost along the road. We traveled to the region from Nelson following the winding path of the mighty Buller river to the town of Westport.

Our first stop was at a beach on the Tasman Sea that we had all to ourselves. The sand stretched along the coast for miles and the restless waves lapping onto the shore made it feel surreal!

Returning to the town, we visited the municipal hall with a beautiful clock tower and explored the downtown in search of a cafe. Throughout the town we discovered beautiful sculptures and the remains of coal-mining machines at the local tourism museum.

The name of the town, Westport, comes from Ireland and it started off as a small gold mining village. At present, the main businesses are farming and fishing. In Māori the town is known as Kawatiri.

Continuing south, our next stop was the seal colony at Cape Foulwind. It was just a short walk to the sunny viewpoint to see some seals lazing around on the rocks below.

We then headed towards the Pancake Rocks in Punakaiki. This place was nothing less than spectacular and we just couldn’t get enough of it. The rocks were stacked on top of each other like giant pancakes with waves crashing against them. The snow-capped mountains on the horizon were a great sight to see too.

After a stunning sunset we drove to Hokitika to settle into a nice and cozy place for the night.

Stay tuned for part 2 as we continue to discover this beautiful region of New Zealand.
