The Blood Angels are one of the 20 First Founding Legions of the Space Marines, originally known as the IXth Legion before the Second Founding split the Legiones Astartes into Chapters of 1,000 warriors each. They were led by their noble Primarch, Sanguinius, a figure of great heroism and compassion who embodied the ideals of the Emperor.

However, the Blood Angels are infamous not only for their battle prowess but for the flaws in their gene-seed. They suffer from the Red Thirst, a near-insatiable craving for blood that drives them into a frenzy. After the death of Sanguinius during the Horus Heresy, the Chapter's curse deepened, and they began to succumb to the Black Rage—a descent into madness where they relive their Primarch's final moments, often losing themselves to uncontrollable fury.

Despite these afflictions, the Blood Angels are among the longest-living of the Adeptus Astartes, with some of their number serving the Emperor for over a thousand standard years.
