Fujimori deftly uses the visual quality of linguistic characters as they appear outside of their usual context as a vehicle for exploring Japan’s multifaceted and layered culture and written language system. Drawing inspiration from a particular passage in a manga that he encountered when he was young, Fujimori became enamored with the concept of unintelligible characters and the feeling of encountering language that can only be seen and not understood. His works, therefore, allow the viewer to focus on the complex visual forms of written language as a work of art in themselves, potentially attempting to decode or ascribe some meaning to them.
Fujimori often compares the appearance and function of his work to that of the graffiti tags that adorn some walls in New York City, which often include letters abstracted to the point of near unintelligibility. This abstraction allows the tags which may have meaning to those who made them or others to take on an artistic quality to those unfamiliar with them.
