Description:

Have you ever wondered why Oklahoma has such a peculiar panhandle? Its shape tells a fascinating story of slavery, compromise, and lawlessness. In 1845, when Texas joined the U.S., it had to decide between keeping slavery or a northern strip of land. Thanks to the Missouri Compromise, that land—dubbed "No Man’s Land"—was left unclaimed. For decades, it remained a lawless territory until settlers arrived under the Homestead Act. By 1907, the panhandle became part of Oklahoma. This video unravels the history behind one of the most unusual state shapes in America.

Transcript:

Why do U.S. states look so strange? Take Oklahoma, for example, with its unusual panhandle.

Back in the early 19th century, this strip of land was actually part of Texas. But in 1845, when Texas joined the United States, a big problem arose: the Missouri Compromise. This law banned slavery north of this line and a portion of Texas’s territory sat above that line.

Rather than giving up slavery, Texas chose to give up the land. And just like that, the panhandle was left unclaimed, earning the nickname “No Man’s Land.”

For decades, it remained a lawless, unorganized territory. In 1862, the Homestead Act allowed settlers to claim 160 acres of land if they lived on it for five years. Thousands rushed to stake their claim.

Eventually, the area was folded into the Oklahoma Territory in 1890 and became part of the state when Oklahoma joined the Union in 1907.

Today, the panhandle’s unique shape is a reminder of history’s complicated compromises.
