There was a proposal to dam the entire Mediterranean Sea and create a supercontinent called Atlantropa. This would mean that three dams would have to be built. The first one would be in the Strait of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco, stopping the water coming from the Atlantic Ocean. The second one would be in the Dardanelles Strait to disconnect the Aegean Sea from the Marmara Sea, and the third one would be between Sicily and Tunisia.

All this would result in the dropping of sea levels by 100 meters on the western side and 200 meters on the eastern side, creating 576,000 square kilometers of new land. Of course, this plan remained only at the idea stage, as these dams would be almost impossible to build due to their length and the depth of the water. Another downside of this project is that some coastal cities and important ports would be stranded and the new land would be vulnerable to the destruction of any one of the dams by a single nuclear attack.
