You may be asking yourself, “But wait, won’t exposure activities make OCD worse?!”
We know Exposure and Response Prevention therapy may seem counterintuitive. At first it may feel like OCD is getting worse, because you are allowing yourself to experience the discomfort of the trigger without trying to escape through compulsions and rituals.
It is important to note that the key to effective and safe ERP is ensuring you are engaging in ERP with a highly trained OCD therapist who can help you learn the skills to manage the fear and anxiety associated with your triggers as you disengage from your compulsions and rituals.
Please know that although ERP can at first feel overwhelming and scary, with a trained ERP therapist and caring support, you can overcome and retrain your mind and body to accept and cope with the discomfort.
We believe in you and are here to support and empower you each anxiety-inducing step of the way!
